Psalms Summary

Title: Psalms is an accumulation of worship poems and songs written over a period of many years by several different authors.
Author: Though a lot of people assume the psalms were written by David, there are actually several known authors as well as many written by people who remain unidentified.  In addition to David, we know for sure that other authors include Solomon, the sons of Korah, Asaph, Ethan and Moses.
Date: The time period over which the psalms were written cover a time span ov over 500 years.  Moses lived from approximately 1526 - 1406 BC.  It is imagened that his Psalm was written during the dessert years which would place it around 1586 - 1406 BC.  David became king about 1011 BC and Solomon reigned until 931 BC.  Asaph was worship leader under King David and the Sons of Korah were musicians in the temple.
Main Theme The Psalms are songs of worship.   Each has a specific theme; some dealing with the majesty of God, some dealing with our dependence upon God, some dealing with thanking God for His intervention but all deal with the fact that we are to exault our God and Father and we are to worship Him with every fiber of our very being, every minute of every day.
Location: The majority of the Psalms we can identify who the author is would have been written in or around Jerusalem.
History Other than an occasional reference to a specific situation for which the psalmist is writing there isn't any purpose of historical significance to the psalms.
