There is a flood that destroys all living creatures on the earth.  God provides a new beginning through Noah and his family.  God also covenants with Noah / man that He will never again destroy life on earth through flood.
Because of his faith which is credited to him as righteousness, God establishis His covenant with Abraham that his descendants would be too numerous to count.  He also covenants with Abrahm that all peoples of the earth would be 'blessed' through him.  This is God's promise of a Messiah.  This covenant is passed on through Issac and Jacob (Israel).
The next beginning is with the family of Jacob relocating to Egypt.  This is the family God has chosen to be "His People".  This famly of Jacob becomes the nation of Israel.  The rest of the Old Testament deals with God and His relationshp with this nation.
