Ecclesiastes - Summary

Title: The name of this book, Ecclesiastes, comes from the Greek word "Ecclesia" which means 'assembly'.  The Hebrew word for this is Qoheleth.  This is interpreted as 'The preacher addresses the assembly'.
Author: Hebrew/Jewish tradition claims the author of Qoheleth / Ecclesiastes is Solomon.
Date: This book was written very late in the life of Solomon probably circa 935 BC.
Main Theme The principal theme is dealing with dissapointmet.  Specifically the dissapointments of the author.  Labor, wealth, education are all worthless without God.  Who should no better than a King who was the richest man in the world, had great wisdom and basically anything and everything a man would want but turned from God by serving the gods off all his wives.  He understands better than most the spiritual drought that comes when you know God, have a great relationship with God and throw it all away.
Location: Ecclesiastes would have been written where the king presided in the city of Jerusalem.
History There is not a historical purpose for the writing of Ecclesiastes.  However it does make reference to Solomon's own life experiences having separated himself from the will of God.
Major Contributors: Solomon
