1 & 2 Chronicles

Title: First and Second Chronicles is a chronology of the events and people of Judah.
Author: Although the author of 1 & 2 Chronicles is not identified in the text, it is generally accepted by Jewish tradition and many biblical scholars that the prophet Ezra is the probable author.
Date: The Chronicles were very obviously written after the exiles were released by Prussia and permitted to return to Judah.   The return of the exiles occurred approximately 516 BC 70 years after taken captive by King Nebuchadnezzar in 585 BC.
Main Theme Restoration is the main theme of 1 and 2 Chronicles.  Ezra is telling the story of the people of Israel from creation to the release from captivity.  He is assuring the people that they are the chosesn people.  God's plan is deliberate.  In spite of the sins of the people and God's anger resulting in the punishment of the people by the land being confiscated, the Temple being destroyed and the people taken captive, God's redemptive plan and His desire to restore the people as His is still what God wants.  It reassures the people of their position with God.
Location: The events of 1 and 2 Chronicles take place in the lands of Judah and Israel in the land of judah.
History While 1 and 2 Kings deal with the history of the monarchies of both Israel and Judah, 2 and 2 Chronicles deals with the monarchy of Judah with an occasonal reference to Israel.  These books cover the historical record of Judah from Saul, to David to Solomon through the fall of the Kingdom.  The history actually  begins with a recap of genealogies as the people of Judah are returning from captivity.  It is almost as if 1 & 2 Chronicles is a 'flashback' that ends with Judah going in to captivity.
